Clarice is a mutant, which in her world means she is a human born with a mutation in their DNA referred to as the X-Gene. While this gene has affected her physical appearance, it has also granted her the ability to see energy fields within the physical plane, which she then tears into to create portals. These portals act as facilitators for teleportation; thus, her portals open in pairs for ingress and egress.

While Clarice has shown promising skill with them — creating and holding portals large and long enough to transport groups of people, and even a speeding car — she is still learning the full extent of her abilities, and thus have several limitations:

• currently, one of Clarice's portals must be created at her fingertips, so any teleporting (or "blinking") she does must be done with her present.

• Clarice is unable to properly create portals to places she has never seen or been to before. Doing so creates the risk of whatever passing through her portals to not come out the other side intact.

• creating a portal is physically demanding for Clarice, and thus she cannot hold them open for very long. Factors that affect the longevity of her portals seem to include distance, stress, fear, and how many people or objects she transports through them. When she over-extends herself, she risks falling ill to the point of fainting and unconsciously creating portals around her. Taxing use of her powers also has the side effect of extending or creating more of the purple markings on her face.
